Questions

What do you do in the wedding industry?

I am the Sales Manager for two luxury, exclusive wedding and events venues in Glasgow City Centre—The Exchange and Citation. I was a dedicated wedding coordinator at another city venue in the West End, so I have very much lived and breathed the Scottish wedding industry for the last ten years, building relationships with reputable Scottish wedding suppliers and helping deliver, always keeping in mind their unique and personal vision for their perfect wedding day.

What’s the most common question asked by newly engaged couples?

When booking a city centre venue, couples often ask where they can get photography. The key to getting the best out of your city centre wedding photography is by researching Glasgow’s best city centre photographers—of which there are many. With their expertise, couples will be taken to Glasgow’s hotspots and landmarks, providing them with a wedding gallery of unique and timeless photography.

What’s the first thing you would recommend a couple do when starting to look at planning their wedding?

Our recommendation would be to consider their location and date. Believe it or not, the location of your venue can determine the date itself. If you are looking for a city centre venue, there could be times of the year that suit you better than others. For example, The Exchange sits perfectly on Royal Exchange Square, which benefits in the autumn and winter months from a stunning fairy light backdrop, making the venue perfect for a winter wedding.

How would you recommend choosing the venue?

Like your partner—when you know, you know. There can be many factors to take into consideration when choosing your perfect wedding venue, however it is important to consider all of the beautiful venues that Scotland has to offer. After considering all of your options, you will simply know when you have found the perfect venue for you.

Tips on making the planning less stressful?

Trust in your wedding coordinator and suppliers. When choosing your venue, you will build a relationship with your wedding coordinator who will guide you through the planning process, and my advice would be to utilise this in-house service. Your chosen photographer, florist or band will also have lots of experience in the wedding industry, so trust in these people to help with your planning and allow them to take charge and deliver the day that you have dreamt of.

What is the best way to decide on the wedding size/guest list?

Choosing your wedding guest list can be one of the hardest parts of planning, with friends and family members often giving their opinions on who should be invited to your big day. Stay true to yourself and try not to be influenced too much by others. The beauty of The Exchange is its central location and capacity to hold up to 200 for a reception, so having some extra evening guests can be the perfect balance for your guest list choice.

How to choose your wedding day timeline?

A wedding timeline will be determined by the style of wedding day that you choose and guided by our in-house coordinators. A typical full-day wedding would begin with a 1.30–2.00pm ceremony, followed by a wedding breakfast at 5.00pm and evening reception at 7.30pm. For a twilight-style wedding, the ceremony would begin at 5.00pm followed by a finger food buffet and dancing until the early hours.

Where should you start when looking for wedding vendors?

There are so many fantastic Scottish wedding suppliers, with an abundance of expertise. Your wedding coordinator would be the first point of call to recommend local suppliers who have worked in the venue before. The Scottish Exhibition Centre has a biannual wedding show, which is a fantastic opportunity to meet suppliers. However, lots of wedding venues host their own wedding events, which are more intimate and personal to the venue. Of course, social media is also a great way to explore the suppliers available on the market from the comfort of your own home.

Top tip for enjoying the wedding planning experience?

Trust in the process and don’t compare your wedding planning journey to anyone else’s. The planning can move at your own pace with the assistance of your wedding coordinator, and there is no pressure to be organised years in advance of your wedding day. Be authentic to yourself and your chosen venue, as your wedding day and vision will be completely different to another couple’s dream day.
As you start planning, remember Pauline’s tips! Take some time to clarify your vision and focus on what truly matters to both of you. Keep the conversation flowing and enjoy the journey together—these first steps will lay the foundation for a celebration that’s uniquely yours.
